Course Description:

Innovation in technology combined with the latest AAC research has enabled individuals with significant communication challenges to access powerful tools for interactive and efficient communication. This session will address the design strategies, development process and research behind the Tobii Dynavox product communication content. Participants will explore both Compass and Communicator software and learn the purpose and function of each communication tool and learn the key elements for successful AAC assessment, planning and implementation. 

Using video examples, case studies and relevant research, participants will explore how the communication tools found in both the Compass and Communicator page sets can be used to support language and literacy development, social participation and efficient communication. Participants will leave with a collection of practical ideas and tools that can be immediately implemented with individuals of various ages, abilities, and communication levels.

Learning Objectives:  Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

•Identify key elements of the content design process.

•Describe 3 research articles that influenced the content design on the Compass and Communicator page sets.

• Compare and contrast efficiency and precision communication tools.

•Locate evaluation and therapy resources to support effective AAC service delivery.

Holly Schneider, MA CCC-SLP, has prior experience as an Elementary & Intermediate English and Language Arts teacher. After graduating from the University of Texas in 2000 with a Master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology, she began a clinical career at St. David’s Rehabilitation Hospital, working with clients ranging in age from adolescent to geriatric.  Here her focus and passion grew towards working with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to increase her clients’ ability to participate more fully in their lives. Now with TobiiDynavox she is presently a member of the Clinical Training & Implementation Team where she develops and conducts internal and customer trainings, creates implementation resources, and presents at local, national and international conferences about AAC topics. She has publications in JMSLP (2010) and most recently in Advance Healthcare Network for Speech and Hearing (2015).

Core with Core: Help your students cope with vocabulary used in the common core state standards (CCSS). The word of the week is INFER. Have your student define infer with these core words: "make a smart guess from what you know." Have the student say and write the definition. Add the word and definition to a chart of CCSS critical words. To learn with rhythm, rhyme, and movement, repeat this short chant: What I know then have to guess. I must infer, yes yes yes. Show students simple pictures (e.g., a person at the beach). Ask them to make inferences (e.g., what time of the year is it? = summer)

Cooking with Core: Each recipe in the Cooking with Core series shows how to simplify directions in a recipe in order to model and prompt use of core vocabulary. The recipe for this week is No Bake Cheesecake. Use the PASS program to make any necessary visual support materials.

Course Description: As an SLP who understands language and speech production, you can do an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) assessment. Today more than ever, SLPs who work in all settings and across all ages need to be able to provide informed, client-centered recommendations for AAC services. But the number of options available and the variety of individual needs to consider can be overwhelming. Using video and case study discussions, Pat Ourand will guide you through a detailed assessment process to support you in making strong recommendations based on an individual’s specific needs to improve the patient’s ability to communicate. You will walk away with some sample assessment tools, a sample assessment write-up, and a list of useful web references.

PRACTICAL FIDGETS FOR OLDER STUDENTS

Speech pathologists are always learning, and summer is a great time to mull over your caseload: what students were toughest, and how can you serve them better next year? Many of the SLPs in our practice are slowly building their knowledge of sensory strategies.

A question was posed on ASHA Special Interest Group 16: School-based Issues about older students. What can you provide to an older student to keep their hands busy while being conscious of social acceptability? Would one of these work for your students?  Could you use your visits to the dollar store to collect some helpful items?  

• Jewelry: Leather bracelet; stretchy tennis sweatband; spinning rings (available on Amazon); dream catcher bracelet; weighted pocket scarf
• Pocket Tools: Square of felt, pipe cleaner, metal binder ring with pony beads, worry beads, thumb coin, stretchy key chains,Bendaroos, paper clips, found objects from nature such as acorns   

Students will be more successful if they understand the difference between a fidget and a distractor, and are prepared to explain how it helps to teachers/students who question them.
